At Reliance Industries’ 41st Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday, Chairman Mukesh Ambani made several announcements including the new broadband service Jio GigaFiber. He listed Jio’s landmark achievements in the last year and also shared a roadmap for several upcoming launches.
Reliance Jio has already crossed the 200 million subscriber mark in close to 22 months of its launch, and there are no signs of it stopping. Apart from the upcoming broadband services, the announcements included WhatsApp and YouTube support in the Jio Phone, the launch of Jio Phone 2 and Jio Smart Home accessories suite, and more.
Additionally, Ambani also told shareholders that the company is planning to integrate online and offline marketplaces using its flagship technology platform Jio. While Jio GigaFiber and Jio Phone 2 took away most of the spotlight at the event, here are all the important things announced at Reliance AGM 2018.
Jio Phone Monsoon Hungama Offer
Mukesh Ambani also announced the Jio Phone Monsoon Hungamaoffer that will allow existing feature phone users to exchange their current device for the Jio Phone for just for Rs. 501. This offer will start on July 21.
Under the new offer, existing feature phone users can get the Jio Phone in lieu of their old phone. “We have just reduced the effective cost of the Jio Phone from Rs. 1,500 to as low as Rs. 501,” said Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries, while announcing the latest Jio Phone-focused offer.
Amid a number of announcements at the 41st Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries, Akash Ambani and Isha Ambani, Board of Directors of Reliance Jio Infocomm and Reliance Retail announced the second, much-advanced edition of the JioPhone – the JioPhone 2.
The phone, priced Rs 2,999, is slated to be released on August 15 and will contain ‘advanced features’ compared to its predecessor, the JioPhone.
Mukesh Ambani also unveiled the JioPhone Monsoon Hungama offer which will start from July 21. Under this, existing customers can replace their old JioPhones to get a new JioPhone (launched in 2017) for just Rs 501.
Jio Brings Smart Home Accessories Suite
The Jio Smart Home Accessories Suite was also unveiled on Thursday, and it includes TV camera, plugs, doorbells, Wi-Fi extender, and more. The accessories can be used to control the entire home via the MyJio application. Apart from the major connected devices, Jio is set to bring the smoke sensor, water leak sensor, siren, gas leak sensor, panic button, door sensor, and smart video doorbells. These have been designed to let users control and monitor their homes remotely using their smartphones. The prime purpose of the new launch is to expand the presence of connected homes in India.
Jio Phone 2 specificationsThe JioPhone 2 will have a 512 MB RAM and 4 GB of storage space with expandable storage support of 128 GB. The phone will run on KaiOS and it will carry a battery of 2000 mAH. The phone will have a 2 MP camera on the back and a VGA camera on the front for selfies.
The new phone supports dual SIMs and has 4G and VoLTE support.
Akash Ambani said that the JioPhone 2 users will be able to use YouTube, Facebook and WhatsApp apps which will be specially designed for the device. All apps will be fully voice-command-compatible and will work as well as they do on other Android and iOS devices.
The JioPhone was launched last year and currently, there are more than 25 million users in the country.
